Sort It: Group Sort Game

A drag-and-drop group sort game for the classroom smartboard. Students come to the board and drag each card into the right group. Right cards snap in, wrong ones bounce back. Play as a class against the clock or in teams.

How to play Sort It

  1. Pick a ready-made sort or type your own groups, one per line, like Mammals | dog, whale, bat.
  2. Invite a student to the board. They drag a card into the group it belongs to. On a computer, click a card and then click a group, or press 1–4.
  3. Right cards snap into the group with a ding. Wrong cards shake and bounce back.
  4. Whole class: sort every card as fast as you can and beat your best time. Teams: take turns for points, or race the clock one team after another.

Sorting is one of the best ways to check understanding of categories in science, grammar and math. For a version without a screen, try Categories, Odd One Out or Four Corners.

Frequently asked questions

Does dragging work on a touch screen?

Yes. Cards follow a finger on interactive whiteboards, touch panels and tablets, and a mouse on a laptop. You can also click a card and then click its group.

How many groups and cards can I use?

Two to four groups with as many items as you like. Choose 8, 12, 16 or all cards per game; a new random mix is drawn each time.

How does the team race work?

Each team sorts the same cards in turn while a stopwatch runs. Every wrong drop adds 3 seconds. The fastest team wins.
