How to play Categories
- Write five to eight categories on the board (an animal, a country, a food, a verb, a job).
- Pick a random letter.
- Students have two minutes to write one word per category starting with that letter.
- Read answers aloud. Unique answers score two points; answers someone else also wrote score one.
- Play several rounds with new letters.
Variations
- Content categories: a mineral, a planet, a scientist, a body part.
- Also known as "Stop the Bus" in ESL classrooms: the first student to finish shouts "Stop the bus!"
π‘ Teacher tips
- Skip hard letters like Q, X and Z for younger grades.
